Trishakti Sappers’ innovation wins national recognition for flood safety in Sikkim
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Indian Army’s Eastern Command has achieved national recognition for its innovative disaster management efforts, with the Trishakti Sappers’ Advanced Flood Monitoring System (AFMS) standing out at Inno Yodha, a prominent competition showcasing technological advancements in defence and disaster response.

Developed in response to the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that struck the Teesta River in Sikkim in October 2023, the AFMS addresses the critical need for real-time flood monitoring and early warning systems.

Led by Havildar Suresh PK of the Engineer Regiment, the AFMS leverages advanced technology to track water levels and issue timely SMS alerts to facilitate rapid disaster response. It incorporates a microcontroller, UV sensor, and GSM module, utilizing the SONAR principle for accurate flood detection and early warnings.

The system is expected to play a pivotal role in protecting Indian Army personnel and Sikkim’s local population from the devastating impact of sudden floods.

This recognition at Inno Yodha underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to using technological innovation to enhance disaster preparedness and safeguard vulnerable communities.

The AFMS highlights the potential of military-driven initiatives to address pressing challenges in disaster management.

As Sikkim continues to rebuild after the October floods, the AFMS stands as a symbol of resilience and proactive planning, demonstrating how technology and ingenuity can mitigate risks and save lives in disaster-prone regions.
