New Delhi: Students at PM SHRI Adarsh Vidyalayas in Assam will soon experience a transformative way of learning as IIT Guwahati develops India’s first VR-enabled metaverse platform tailored for schools.
Named “Gyandhara”, the project aims to make complex concepts in mathematics, science, and social science more accessible and engaging by using immersive virtual reality (VR) technology.
The initiative, a collaboration between IIT Guwahati, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Assam Government’s Department of Education, will begin as a pilot program later this year in 56 PM SHRI schools across the state.
According to Dr. Keyur Sorathia, Associate Professor at IIT Guwahati and the project’s lead, Gyandhara will revolutionise education by offering interactive 3D environments where students aged 13 to 18 can learn in dynamic and engaging ways.
“At Gyandhara, we are integrating VR technology to create immersive educational content, helping students explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and collaborate with peers globally. Education should be an exciting journey, and this metaverse will empower students to unlock their full potential,” Dr. Sorathia explained.
The platform will initially focus on content for classes 8 to 12, delivered in local languages to ensure accessibility.
It aims to simplify abstract topics that are traditionally challenging to teach using conventional methods like flat board lessons.

“Our goal is to transform how students engage with complex subjects by offering a metaverse environment where lessons are more visual, interactive, and relatable. This pilot will serve as the foundation for expansion to other schools across the Northeast and eventually the entire country,” Sorathia added.
Gyandhara is expected to bridge gaps in traditional learning methods, making education an exciting and rewarding journey for students.
If successful, it could become a blueprint for integrating advanced technology into India’s education system on a larger scale.
