Guwahati: High mobile phone use may lower sperm count in men, the CNN has reported quoting the United Kingdom-based scientists of the University of Manchester.
The CNN reported that during the last 50 years, global sperm counts have declined by more than 50 percent, leaving researchers to undertake a research on the subject.
The scientists at the University of Manchester studied men between the ages of 18 and 22 and found out that they used their phones more than 20 times a day and had a 21 percent higher risk of a low overall sperm count.
During the 13-year long study period, it was found that the evolution of phone technology had direct impact on sperm count.
Mobile phones are integral part of modern-day lives, and notably, they emit low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.
Interestingly, the impact of cell phones on male fertility has been a topic of controversy and discussion for several years now.
“I am intrigued by the observation that the biggest effect was apparently seen with older 2G and 3G phones compared to modern 4G and 5G versions,” Allan Pacey, the deputy dean of the faculty of biology, medicine and health at the University of Manchester told CNN.
Allan Pacey said, “This is not something I am able to explain.” The study also shared that there was no decline in the shape and motility of the sperm.
Alison Campbell, chief scientific officer of Care Fertility, a network of fertility clinics, told CNN that men looking to conceive, or wanting to improve their sperm health should exercise, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking and limit alcohol.
The report suggested that people should keep the phone away from the body and head, and should use speakerphone or headphones instead.
