GUWAHATI: The ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce its final verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal in women’s 50kg wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024 today.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) held a hearing on Friday lasting three hours to consider Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from the Olympics.
However, the decision against her disqualification will be announced today as the president of the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) ad-hoc division has extended the time limit given to the panel
Phogat participated in the proceedings virtually.
The Indian wrestler was disqualified after she was found 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in for her gold medal match in the women’s 50kg wrestling event on August 7.
The United World Wrestling (UWW), the parent body of world wrestling, stripped Vinesh of a podium finish according to the game rules.
Vinesh was represented by high-profile senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.
Her legal team argued that she had not committed any form of fraud, asserting that her weight gain was a natural result of her body’s recovery process and should not qualify as a violation of competition rules.
