Imphal: Altogether 19 statues of Olympians of Manipur have reached the Manipur Olympian Park at Sangaithel, chief minister N. Biren Singh has tweeted.
The Manipur government has almost completed the construction of Manipur Olympian Park, and is all set to be inaugurated early next year.
The Manipur Olympian Park has been set up to honour all the 19 Olympians of the state.
The northeastern state of Manipur is described as the powerhouse of sports in India, and has produced thousands of international sportspersons, especially football, hockey, boxing, weight lifting and athletics.
So far, Manipur has produced 19 Olympians, and three of whom won medals in the world’s biggest sporting event.
The achievers include boxer MC Mary Kom (bronze), weightlifting star Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (silver) and hockey player Sanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma (bronze).
Similarly, Indian Women’s Hockey Team, Sushila Chanu too created history, but missed the medal just by a whisker.
“The Manipur Olympian Park will also have enough space to honour future Olympians,” N Biren Singh said.
