New Delhi: Indian tennis stalwart Rohan Bopanna, one of the country’s few Grand Slam champions and a mainstay on the ATP Tour for over two decades, has announced his retirement from professional tennis.
The 45-year-old’s final appearance came at the Paris Masters this week, where he and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik exited in the opening round.
In an emotional note titled “A Goodbye… But Not The End,” Bopanna said he was “officially hanging up his racquet,” as he looked back on a career that began in the coffee hills of Coorg and took him to the sport’s biggest stages.
“From chopping blocks of wood in Coorg to strengthen my serve and running through coffee estates to build stamina, to finally standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world — it’s all been surreal,” he wrote.
Bopanna, known for his powerful serve and longevity on the doubles circuit, was among just four Indians to win a Grand Slam title.

He also represented India at multiple Olympics and Davis Cup campaigns, leaving a lasting imprint on Indian tennis.
He had played his last Davis Cup tie against Morocco in Lucknow in 2023 and ended his India career following the Paris Olympics last year.
With his retirement, Indian tennis bids adieu to one of its most consistent and respected figures — a player who combined endurance, skill, and sportsmanship over an extraordinary career.
