Olympic gold and silver medallist Neeraj Chopra will headline a star-studded global javelin competition, which India will host most likely in September.
This was informed by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced on Tuesday.
This event is in addition to a slew of competitions India has expressed its interest in hosting, including a bid for the Marquee 2029 World Championships.
The former AFI president, Adille Sumariwalla, has confirmed India’s interest in organizing the 2029 World Championships and 2027 World Relays.
Additionally, during Sebastian Coe’s visit in November, India submitted its interest to host the 2028 World Junior Championships.
Sumariwalla said India will host a top javelin competition in which the top 10 javelin throwers in the world will compete.
This will be an invitation tournament to be held later this year, he stated.
“Neeraj Chopra will be there. He is part of the team that is organizing the event, along with JSW, a foreign firm, and the AFI,” he added.

He said this initiative stems from the surge in interest in the javelin, further amplified by the declaration of August 7th – the date of Neeraj Chopra’s Olympic gold medal victory in Tokyo – as National Javelin Day.
Sumariwalla said, “Bids are open at the moment for (2028) World Junior Championships, 2029 World Championships, and World Relays (2027), and India is going to bid for all of them.”
