Miami: Novak Djokovic made history at the Miami Open by securing his 411th ATP Masters 1000 match victory, surpassing Rafael Nadal’s previous record.
The Serbian star achieved this milestone with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 third-round win over Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli, a lucky loser entry.
Entering the tournament with 409 Masters 1000 wins, Djokovic equalled Nadal’s record in his opening-round triumph over Rinki Hijikata.
His latest victory cements his place as the all-time leader in Masters 1000 match wins since the series’ inception in 1990.
Djokovic also holds the records for the most titles (40), finals (59), and semifinals (78) at this level.
“It’s an honour to reach another milestone and break another record,” Djokovic said. “There’s always something on the line every time I play, and that fuels my motivation to perform well.”
Djokovic’s journey at Masters 1000 events spans nearly two decades, starting with his first win in Paris in 2005 against Victor Hanescu.
He claimed his maiden title at this level in Miami in 2007 and became the first player to complete the Career Golden Masters in 2018 by winning all nine events in the series—a feat he later doubled by 2020.
His career Masters 1000 record now stands at an impressive 411-91.
The 37-year-old is chasing his seventh Miami Open title, which would surpass Andre Agassi’s record for the most tournament wins.
Djokovic’s next challenge is a round of 16 clash with Lorenzo Musetti, the 23-year-old Italian and 15th seed.
