Legendary boxer from Manipur M C Mary Kom has withdrawn from her role as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics, citing personal reasons, announced the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Friday.
In a letter addressed to Usha, Mary Kom reportedly expressed regret at having to relinquish her position, highlighting that personal reasons left her with no choice but to step down.
“I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign,” a national news agency quoted from the letter.
Mary Kom, who was appointed to the role on March 21, was designated as the logistical in-charge of India’s contingent at the July 26-August 11 Games.
Her resignation comes as a setback to the IOA’s plans for the Olympics.
In response to Mary Kom’s decision, Usha expressed sadness and respect, stating that Olympic medal-winning boxer and Chairperson of the IOA Athletes Commission Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons.
“We respect her decision and her privacy,” she told the news agency.
Usha further assured that consultations would be made to select a suitable replacement for Mary Kom, highlighting her support for the legendary boxer.
“I completely understand her request and respect her decision. I have also conveyed to her that she will always have my own support and that of IOA,” Usha added.
Mary Kom’s withdrawal from the role underscores the complexities and personal sacrifices involved in serving one’s country at such prestigious events.
On March 21, Mary Kom’s appointment was celebrated as recognition of her remarkable career and unwavering commitment to the sport, positioning her as an ideal candidate to mentor and motivate Indian athletes on the international platform.
