KOHIMA: The curtains have drawn on the 3rd North East Games 2024 with Manipur as the overall champion, reaffirming its stronghold as the powerhouse of sporting talents in the Northeast.
Manipur’s athletes amassed an impressive tally of 130 medals, including 52 gold, 38 silver, and 40 bronze, asserting their dominance over the competition.
This remarkable feat not only secured Manipur’s reign as champions for the third consecutive time but also showcased their unwavering commitment to excellence on the sporting stage.
Nagaland emerged as a formidable contender, clinching the 1st runner-up position with a remarkable haul of 134 medals.
Their stellar performance, comprising 48 gold, 42 silver, and 44 bronze medals, reflects the burgeoning sports culture and talent pool within the state, propelling them to the forefront of Northeastern athletics.
Meanwhile, Assam displayed commendable resilience and skill, securing the 3rd position with a total of 139 medals.
Their competitive journey to the podium was marked by fierce determination, with 43 gold, 44 silver, and 52 bronze medals highlighting the depth of talent and spirit of sportsmanship prevalent in the state.
Meghalaya and Tripura showcased their mettle in the games, with Meghalaya securing a modest haul of 55 medals, placing second to last, and Tripura closely following suit.
In addition to the medal tally, special recognition was accorded to outstanding individuals and states for their exemplary contributions to the games.
Sikkim was honoured with the Fair Play Award for embodying the highest standards of sportsmanship, while Tripura received the Spirit of Olympic Award for their commitment to unity and excellence.
The spotlight shone on Nagaland’s Venuzo Dawhuo, who etched his name in history by clinching gold medals in two different sports disciplines, earning him the title of Outstanding Sportsman.
