Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu (48kg) clinched a silver medal at the World Championships in the 48kg category in Forde, Norway.
Her 199kg total (84kg snatch, 115kg clean and jerk) marked her third career medal at the event and ended India’s medal drought at the championships since 2022.
This was her first appearance at the World Championships since the Paris Olympics, where she had finished fourth. Her performance also lifted India’s total medal count at the World Weightlifting Championships to 18-all won by women athletes.
Chanu began the competition with a successful 84kg snatch but missed her next two attempts at 87kg, leaving her third in the snatch segment. She bounced back in the clean and jerk, completing lifts of 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg. Her final lift of 115kg matched her best from the Tokyo Olympics and secured silver in both the clean and jerk and the overall total.
North Korean weightlifter Ri Song-gum dominated the event by winning three gold medals in the 48kg division. Ri set new world records with a 91kg snatch, a 122kg clean and jerk, and a total lift of 213kg.
Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took the bronze medal with a total lift of 198kg.
Last month, Chanu had also won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad, lifting 193kg (84kg snatch, 109kg clean and jerk), a victory that secured her direct qualification for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This performance in Norway adds to her impressive international record.
