The diplomatic estrangement between India and Pakistan after the dastardly Pahalgam attack followed by India’s retaliation in the form of Operation Sindoor, has now led to the cancellation of the encounter between the two teams in the ongoing World Championship of Legends tournament in England.
The marquee clash between former players of the two countries scheduled to be held on Sunday at Edgbaston has been called off after several Indian legends refused to take the field.
The WCL has apologised for failing to respect the sentiments of the Indian players who were in no mood to lock horns with Pakistan in the wake of the mayhem unleashed by terrorists harboured by the neighbouring country.
In fact there were reports that players like Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan and Shikhar Dhawan had already opted out of the match over Pakistan’s nefarious designs to foment violence across the border.
In keeping with the volatile situation, the WCL thought it apt to call off the match.
In fact the organisers had already disallowed the skipper of the Pakistan team Shahid Afridi to participate in the match owing to his vitriolic and incriminating statements against India and with several Indian legends deciding against taking the field; the writing was on the wall.
However, the WCL hasn’t clarified whether the all-important clash would be rescheduled or not.
But as of now, fans waiting with bated breath to enjoy their favourite players toiling it out on the greens will have to reconcile to reality.
