India is set to hold the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2030, with Ahmedabad as the venue for the centenary edition of the event.
The 24th edition of the Commonwealth Games will mark the 100 years since the multi-sport spectacle was first held in Ontario.
Gujarat’s largest city was recommended as the “proposed host” by the executive board of Commonwealth Sport following its meeting on Wednesday.
Ahmedabad will now be put forward to full Commonwealth Sport membership, with a final decision to be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025, a statement from Commonwealth Sport said.
If approved in November 2025, Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city to host the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi in 2010.
India last hosted the CWG in 2010 in Delhi — an event that was overshadowed by poor planning, delays in infrastructure completion and allegations of corruption.
India is bidding to host the Commonwealth Games as part of its broader vision to host the Olympic Games in 2036. Nigeria had also submitted a bid to host the CWG in 2030.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is overseeing India’s 2036 Olympics bid, called the CWG 2030 decision a “day of immense joy and pride for India”. “Raising world-class infrastructure and raising a nationwide pool of sports talent, (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji has made India a marvel of a sports destination,” Shah posted on X.
The recommendation follows an extensive evaluation process overseen by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee, which assessed candidate cities on a wide range of criteria, including technical delivery, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values.
The 2030 Games are expected to draw participation from 72 nations and territories.
