GUWAHATI: The city braces for a momentous occasion in Indian football history as Sunil Chhetri, the iconic talisman of the national team, prepares to step onto the field for his 150th international match in the World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan on Tuesday.

In recognition of Chhetri’s remarkable milestone, the AIFF announced plans to felicitate the Indian star during the return leg clash against Afghanistan in Guwahati.

With this landmark achievement, Chhetri joins an elite group of players worldwide, reaffirming his status as one of the game’s true legends.

Chhetri’s journey to this historic milestone traces back nearly two decades to his senior debut against Pakistan on June 12, 2005, in a friendly match in Quetta.

Since that memorable day, the 39-year-old striker has been a beacon of excellence, donning the national jersey with pride and passion.

In his illustrious career spanning 149 appearances for the Blue Tigers, Chhetri has etched his name in the annals of Indian football history, rewriting records and captivating fans with his exceptional skill and goal-scoring prowess.

With a staggering tally of 93 goals, he stands as the highest goal-scorer for the Indian national team, a proof to his unparalleled talent and dedication.

Chhetri’s journey is marked by remarkable consistency and milestones, including his unique feat of scoring in his first, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th, and 125th international matches, a testament to his enduring impact on the game.

Reflecting on Chhetri’s extraordinary achievement, All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey hailed the veteran striker as a true inspiration and a driving force behind the resurgence of Indian football.

“Chhetri playing his 150th international match is an extraordinary accomplishment that will keep the Indian football flag flying high,” Chaubey expressed in a statement.

AIFF acting secretary general M Satyanarayan praised Chhetri’s invaluable contributions to Indian football and expressed hope for his continued dedication to the sport.

As the countdown begins for Chhetri’s historic appearance, fans across the nation eagerly await the moment when their beloved captain takes to the field.
