Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s iconic No 7 jersey won’t be available to any Indian cricket player as the BCCI has decided to ‘retire’ the jersey number as a tribute to the World Cup winning skipper.

Three years after he retired from international cricket, the BCCI, in a tribute to his contribution to the sport, has decided to ‘retire’ the No 7 jersey.

As the news of ‘retirement’ of Dhoni’s No 7 jersey has gone viral on the internet, it was found that very few people in India knew why the wicketkeeper-batsman always wore jersey No 7.

Dhoni, who led India to two World Cup titles — T20 World Cup in 2007 and ODI World Cup in 2011, retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. But, he continued to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Why Dhoni always chose the iconic jersey No 7

There have been various stories and rumours which always revolved around MS Dhoni’s decision to always opt for No 7 as his jersey number. No, he is not superstitious, nor the jersey number has anything to do with numerology.

The only reason behind Dhoni selecting the number always was only because it was his birth date and nothing more. His birthday is July 7 – the 7th day of the 7th month.

“But it’s one number which is very close to my heart and I have kept it over the years with me,” Dhoni had once said during an interview.
