In a gripping quarter-final clash at the Australian Open on Wednesday, Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden scripted tennis history, clinching the coveted No. 1 men’s doubles ranking.
The feat marks Bopanna’s ascent to the summit at an age when most players contemplate retirement – 43.
The Indian-Australian duo faced Argentine opponents Máximo González and Andrés Molteni, conquering them with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The victory was sweet but not straightforward, as the match had to be relocated due to unexpected bubbles on court three at Melbourne Park.
The previous record-holder for the oldest men’s doubles No. 1, Mike Bryan, relinquished his position at 41 years and 76 days in 2019, as per the International Tennis Federation.
Bopanna, reflecting on this historic achievement, expressed the profound impact he believes it will have globally. “It’s just going to inspire a lot of people, and I don’t think just in tennis. People all over the world, being 40 and above, it’s just going to inspire them in a different way,” he shared.
As Bopanna prepares to conclude the tournament at the age of 43 years and 330 days, his achievement becomes a beacon of inspiration for athletes across generations.
The seasoned tennis player acknowledged his partner, Ebden, for the remarkable journey. “Matt and I both have equal points, so technically I think we should be No. 1 together,” he quipped.
Their coach, Scott Davidoff, highlighting the camaraderie between the two, stated, “It’s definitely an emotional day, but we have more things to keep looking forward to tomorrow.”
Davidoff has been a witness to Bopanna’s journey since 2005, working alongside him for the past 12 years.
As the duo readies for the semi-finals against Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang, the tennis world eagerly awaits the unfolding chapters of this age-defying partnership and their pursuit of further glory.
