Kokrajhar: The 134th edition of the Indian Oil Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest and the world’s third-oldest football tournament, was inaugurated with grandeur and patriotic fervour at the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Region.

Over 14,000 spectators filled the stadium to witness a dazzling blend of military precision, cultural expression, and sporting excitement.

The opening ceremony was attended by a host of prominent figures, including Bhutan’s former Prime Minister Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering, Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, Assam Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MPs Rwngwra Narzary and Joyanta Basumatary, Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri, and senior military officials including Lt Gen R C Tiwari, Maj Gen Rajesh Arun Moghe, and Lt Gen Gambhir Singh.

The event featured aerial displays by Su-30 and Prachand helicopters, a para-motor flight demonstration, and the ascent of a hot air balloon, captivating the audience from the skies.

On the ground, the Indian Armed Forces’ Pipe, Brass, and Jazz Bands performed in harmony, while traditional and fusion dances from across Northeast India—including Bagrumba, Bihu, Dhal Thungri, and Bardai Sikhla—lit up the stage.

Additional cultural highlights included Bhangra, Chhau, Gorkhali drill, and a Kalaripayattu martial arts showcase. A rousing rendition of “Assam Badluram” stirred patriotic emotions among the crowd.

Adding to the ceremonial grandeur, the three iconic trophies of the tournament—the Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy, and President’s Cup—were presented with full military honours.

The festivities culminated in the tournament’s opening match between ITBP FC and Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC, drawing loud cheers from a packed stadium.

This marks the third consecutive year Kokrajhar is hosting the prestigious tournament, reflecting the region’s deepening connection with the sport.

Army recruitment drive engages youth with career insights at the event

Meanwhile, the Army Recruiting Office, Narangi, turned the spotlight on military careers with an engaging outreach initiative.

Amid the fanfare of the iconic football tournament, representatives set up interactive displays and an information centre at the SAI STC Stadium to educate youth about opportunities in the Indian Army, including Agniveer, NDA, TES, and CDS entries.

The initiative drew strong interest from students and aspiring candidates, blending the spirit of sport with the call to serve the nation.
