GUWAHATI: As winter tightens its grip, several states in the Northeast are shrouded in dense fog with the conditions predicted to persist until January 15, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
The IMD highlighted that “cold” conditions will affect the morning hours in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura over the next four days.
Other states – Manipur, Nagaland, and Meghalaya – have already experienced a considerable dip in temperatures to around 5 degrees Celsius, the report added.
Thursday saw Manipur’s capital, Imphal, recording a shivering 4.9 degrees Celsius, while Sohra in Meghalaya and Kohima in Nagaland touched 5.8 and 5.2 degrees, respectively, the local press quoted regional forecasting centre.
The IMD’s report attributed the changes to the occurrence of Easterly or North-Easterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels over the region.
Earlier on January 10, Meghalaya’s Umiam and Tripura’s Agartala reported dense fog between 5:30 am and 8:30 am, drastically reducing visibility to a mere 50 meters.
Meanwhile, parts of Assam and Mizoram experienced shallow to moderate fog on Thursday.
Temperature data indicated a chilly 6.5 degrees Celsius and 7.9 degrees in North Lakhimpur and Jorhat, respectively, in Assam.
Earlier in the day, overcast weather conditions delayed ferry services between Majuli and Jorhat, with several ferries and steamers at Kamalabari Ferry Ghat and Nimati Ghat only starting operations around 7:30 am.
