West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose stepped down from his post on Thursday, after serving for over three years. His resignation comes just weeks before the state’s assembly elections.
Bose reportedly tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. He was appointed as West Bengal governor in November 2022.
Confirming his resignation, Bose stated that he “spent enough time at the Governor’s office”.
“Yes, I have resigned. I have been the Governor of Bengal for three-and-a-half years; it’s enough for me,” Bose said.
Following the development, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her astonishment over the decision. In a post on X, Banerjee wrote that she was “Shocked and concerned” over the decision. She also alleged that Bose may have faced pressure from Amit Shah for “political reasons” ahead of the Bengal polls.
“The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections,” she wrote on social media.
The Chief Minister further said that she had been informed by Home Minister Amit Shah that he would be replaced by R N Ravi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
“Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard. Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure. The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States.,” she added.
