New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 54 state private universities as defaulters for failing to comply with mandatory information submission and public disclosure requirements under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956.
UGC officials said the universities had been repeatedly reminded via emails and online meetings to provide detailed information for inspection, along with attested supporting documents from the registrar.
Institutions were also instructed to upload the completed formats and appendices on their official websites, linking them from the homepage to ensure accessibility for students and the public.
“Despite repeated reminders, many institutions failed to comply,” UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said.
“Information on the website should be easily accessible on the home page without requiring registration or login, and a search facility should be provided for user convenience.”

Madhya Pradesh accounted for the highest number of defaulting universities at 10, followed by Gujarat (8), Sikkim (5), and Uttarakhand (4).
The UGC has circulated the list of defaulters and warned the institutions to take corrective action immediately.
Authorities have indicated that further action may follow if compliance is not ensured.
The move is part of the UGC’s broader effort to strengthen monitoring of private universities.
In July, the regulator had warned 23 institutions for failing to appoint ombudspersons as mandated by regulations.
