Kolkata: In a tragic incident that underscores the perilous impact of extreme weather in the northeastern region, a massive landslide struck a military camp in Chhaten, Sikkim, claiming the lives of at least three individuals and leaving six security personnel missing.
The disaster, which occurred on Sunday evening, was triggered by incessant and heavy rainfall that has lashed the region in recent days.
According to a statement issued by a defence official on Monday, rescue operations are currently underway amid extremely difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.
“Three bodies have been recovered so far, while four personnel were rescued with minor injuries,” the official confirmed.
Efforts to locate the six missing individuals are ongoing, with specialised rescue teams working tirelessly around the clock despite the harsh environment.
“Operations are being conducted in challenging conditions, but our teams remain committed to finding those who are still missing,” the statement added.
The relentless rainfall has severely impacted normal life across several parts of Sikkim, raising concerns over further landslides and disruptions.
Authorities have urged residents and travellers to remain alert and avoid vulnerable areas.
