Space and technology billionaire Elon Musk has announced his exit as the chief of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), thanking US President Donald Trump for the “opportunity to reduce wasteful spending”.
The task force— Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — was established earlier this year to cut federal spending.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Elon Musk posted on X.
He said that DOGE mission will continue to strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.
Musk was appointed as a Special Government Employee by the trump administration to work a federal job for 130 days each year.
His 130-day mandate as a special government employee in the Trump administration was set to expire around May 30.
His departure comes a day after Musk’s first ever criticism of Trump, where he said the President’s signature “big, beautiful” spending bill increases budget deficit and undermines the DOGE team’s work.
Musk said, “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”
“A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion,” he said.
