GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) on Monday inaugurated a 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge (BSB) over the Teesta River constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO)’s Project Swastik at Singtham.
The Indrani bridge, initially constructed by the Sikkim Public Works Department, was washed away by the catastrophic flash floods in October 2023. The severe damage to the road network and numerous bridges along the river left the northern and Southern region of Sikkim cut off from the rest of the country.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Tamang emphasized the state government’s priority of restoring road connectivity and providing relief to the people affected by the natural calamities.
He lauded the BRO’s crucial role in the state’s infrastructure development.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Sikkim government immediately issued orders to finalize the construction of suspension bailey bridges. In a collaborative effort, a joint survey was conducted with GRSE, leading to the signing of an MoU for the construction of the Bailey Suspension Bridge.
After obtaining the necessary land approvals and clearances, Project Swastik commenced the construction of the 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge at the Indrani Bridge site in mid-May. The abutments of bridge were constructed by 30 July and within 10 days the bridge super structure was constructed.
The newly constructed bridge is a significant step in South Sikkim’s recovery from the devastating flash floods. It will not only reconnect the region but also pave the way for enhanced economic and social development in the complete Namchi region.
