Gangtok: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced the introduction of the Sikkim Life Skills Curriculum for students, starting from the next academic session, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the state’s safety framework.
The curriculum is designed to equip students with essential life-saving skills, including CPR, the Heimlich manoeuvre, first aid, snake-bite response, fire extinguisher use, and disaster-preparedness training for earthquakes, landslides, floods, and fires, the CM said.
In addition to emergency response skills, the program will focus on developing key soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and emotional resilience. Tamang directed the Education Department, Health Department, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to finalise the curriculum and training modules without delay to ensure timely implementation.
Speaking at the 3rd State-level Coordination meeting with senior officials, Tamang said, “I am delighted to announce a major initiative aimed at empowering our students and strengthening the safety framework of Sikkim.” He added that the Life Skills Curriculum is fully aligned with the guiding principles of “Health First, Life Foremost, and Education Forward.”
Addressing the shortage of medical professionals in the state, Tamang also stated that any doctor wishing to pursue postgraduate studies must first complete three years of mandatory service at a Primary Health Centre.
