GUWAHATI: In a dramatic twist to the Sheena Bora murder trial, the prosecution informed the trial court in New Delhi on Wednesday that parts of Sheena Bora’s purported skeleton, earlier reported as “untraceable”, have been located at the CBI’s office.
Sheena Bora, aged 24 at the time of her alleged murder in 2012, was reportedly killed by her mother Indrani Mukerjea and others.
The disclosure of the remains’ discovery coincided with an email received by the trial court confirming that Sheena’s bones were in possession of a forensic expert who had examined them and was now set to testify as a witness in the case.
Judge S P Naik Nimbalkar apprised defence attorneys present in court about another email alleging sudden wealth acquisition by a witness in the case.
Responding to the defence’s request, the judge directed the central probe agency to investigate this claim.
Earlier, on April 24, the prosecution had stated to the court that Bora’s remains were untraceable, reiterating this on June 10.
“After going through the office ‘malkhana’ (store), the articles i.e. the bones are (found to be) lying in the malkhana,” prosecutor C J Nandode was quoted as saying by a national news agency.
The prosecution clarified that the CBI did not consider these articles as evidence because they were not referenced in the chargesheet.
As a result, they were not formally documented in the case records. Subsequently, the court resumed the cross-examination of the forensic expert involved.
Indrani Mukerjea, the former media executive and primary accused in the murder case, is currently out on bail.
Last month, following the prosecution’s statement that Bora’s remains were “untraceable”, Mukerjea had contested this assertion, claiming no skeleton remains were discovered in 2012 and describing the entire narrative as fabricated.
Mukerjea also suggested questioning Bora’s fiancé, Rahul Mukerjea, asserting he was the last person known to have seen Bora alive.
The murder case surfaced in 2015, revealing that Bora had allegedly been strangled in a car by her mother, assisted by Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai in April 2012.
