Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted at discussing further promotion of Indian films in Russia during his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi is scheduled to visit Kazan, Russia, for the BRICS Summit on October 22-23.

The 16th BRICS Summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’, will focus on the role of the collective in resisting Western influence and evaluating their futures as drivers of the global economy.

Addressing foreign media ahead of the BRICS summit, Putin claimed that Indian cinema is more popular in Russia than entertainment from any other BRICS country.

He mentioned that Russia has a dedicated TV channel broadcasting Indian movies continuously.

He said that marketing of Indian films in Russia requires further discussion.

Putin highlighted the need for dialogue on promoting Indian films alongside other sectors like pharmaceuticals and automotive.

“Cinema products and film industry are a part of the economy, and is to be duly regulated. India has made a lot of decisions to protect its own market,” Putin said.

“I am sure we will come to terms 100 percent, we are positive that if the Indian friends have this interest, we will find common ground to promote Indian films to the Russian market,” he added.

This year, the Moscow International Film Festival will also introduce films from BRICS nations, including India.

Putin said it would be interesting to see not only Indian films but also those from different BRICS countries representing their cultures in the cinema as well.

Putin conveyed his readiness to engage in talks with Prime Minister Modi during the BRICS Summit in Kazan. The meeting could potentially pave the way for increased collaboration between India and Russia in various sectors.

The discussions are anticipated to encompass not only the film industry but also other sectors where both countries can collaborate productively. The primary objective will be to foster opportunities for Indian goods and services within the Russian market, thereby strengthening bilateral ties.
