New Delhi: The Rights and Rights & Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) has taken the step of filing a complaint with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention against the alleged illegal and arbitrary detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a prominent Hindu religious leader in Bangladesh.
Brahmachari was arrested on November 25th by the Bangladeshi authorities and charged with sedition and other offenses.
The RRAG alleges that the charges against Brahmachari are politically motivated and unsubstantiated. The complaint filed by Md Firoz Khan, which led to Brahmachari’s arrest, primarily concerns the placement of ISKCON flags over national flags during a protest.
However, the RRAG argues that there’s no direct evidence linking Brahmachari to this incident and that the charges are based on mere speculation.
Suhas Chakma, Director of the RRAG, highlighted that Brahmachari was not even summoned for questioning before his arrest and that the entire process lacks due process.
The organization further contends that Brahmachari’s detention is discriminatory, targeting him due to his religious beliefs and prominent position within the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
The RRAG’s complaint to the UN Working Group seeks an investigation into the matter and an opinion on the legality of Brahmachari’s detention.
The organization is urging the international community to intervene and ensure that Brahmachari’s rights are protected.
