Rahul Gandhi accuses Assam CM of corruption, says people will jail him

Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and asserting that the people of Assam would eventually “put him in jail.”

Addressing party workers at a meeting in Chaygaon, Gandhi claimed that Sarma behaves like a “raja,” but the growing anger among citizens would hold him and his family accountable for alleged corruption. “Fear is evident on your Chief Minister’s face. He knows that fearless Congress workers will ensure justice is served,” the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said.

Gandhi’s remarks come ahead of next year’s Assam Assembly elections, as the Congress ramps up its offensive against the BJP-led state government.

Accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP, Gandhi alleged that the voter list manipulation seen in Maharashtra could be repeated in Bihar and Assam.

“They cheated in Maharashtra, and they are planning the same in Assam. We must stay vigilant,” he warned.

He also took aim at the media, saying it has abandoned its role as the voice of the people.

“The media no longer reveals the truth. They only showcase Adani, Ambani, the Chief Minister, Modi, and Shah,” he claimed.

Despite the challenges, Gandhi struck a confident note about the Congress’s prospects in Assam. “This manipulation won’t work. We will sweep the assembly elections next year,” he said.

Framing the political battle as one of ideology, Gandhi said the fight is between the “hatred and violence” of the RSS and the “truth and non-violence” of the Congress.

He also painted a stark picture of economic disparity in the country, saying there are “two Hindustans” — one of billionaires hosting extravagant weddings, and another of ordinary citizens struggling with rising taxes and inflation.
