New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs of the 2001 Parliament terror attack on its 23rd anniversary.

The solemn event was held on Friday to honour the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives defending India’s democracy.

On December 13, 2001, terrorists from Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) launched a brazen attack on the Parliament complex, killing nine individuals.

The attack was thwarted by the swift response of security personnel, who prevented the terrorists from entering the building.

All five attackers were neutralized in the Parliament’s forecourt.

During the tribute, President Murmu reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to fighting terrorism, stating that India remains steadfast and united against the forces of terror.

CISF personnel marked the occasion with a ceremonial salute, followed by a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims.

Prominent leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, joined the event held outside the historic old Parliament building, now known as Samvidhan Sadan.

Among those who paid their respects were families of the fallen heroes—six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service members, a gardener, and a TV video journalist—whose bravery ensured the safety of the nation’s legislators.

Until last year, the CRPF conducted the ceremonial “salami shastra” (present arms), a tradition now continued by the CISF.

Leaders were also seen interacting with the martyrs’ families, acknowledging their sacrifice and resilience.

This annual tribute stands as a reminder of the courage and dedication of those who defend India’s democratic institutions against threats of terror.
