Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman on his decisive win in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, expressing hope for closer cooperation to further shared development priorities between the two countries.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.”
He said the victory reflected the confidence and trust reposed by the people of Bangladesh in his leadership.
“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” the prime minister said.
He added, “I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”
The BNP on Friday won the general elections in Bangladesh, paving the way to replace the interim administration that assumed office following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.

The Prime Minister’s comments suggest a renewed effort to strengthen ties with Bangladesh, following a period of friction during the tenure of interim chief Muhammad Yunus.
A Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was killed on Thursday as violence erupted outside a polling centre in Khulna district as voting was underway.
The deceased BNP leader has been identified as Mohibuzzaman Kachi. He reportedly died after suffering head injuries following an altercation that broke out in the Khulna Alia Madrasa polling station.
