Islamabad: Pakistan has announced its intention to nominate US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting his diplomatic efforts during the recent India-Pakistan conflict.
The hostilities, triggered by a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, ended in a ceasefire following days of cross-border exchanges.
The Pakistan government shared the news on social media, stating: “President Donald J. Trump is being formally recommended for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his pivotal role in mediating peace during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.”
The announcement followed a meeting between Trump and Pakistan’s Army Chief, Asim Munir, at the White House.
This rare interaction occurred shortly after the ceasefire, with Munir reportedly advocating for Trump’s nomination, emphasising his role in averting a potential escalation.
During his visit, Munir, who was recently promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, also credited Trump’s intervention with steering the conflict away from a possible nuclear confrontation.
The specifics of their discussion remain undisclosed, but White House officials highlighted Trump’s commitment to reducing tensions in South Asia.
Pakistani media outlets described the meeting as a diplomatic milestone for the country, with officials presenting the White House invitation to Munir as evidence of Trump’s support for regional peace initiatives.
The recent hostilities began after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam, targeting camps in Pakistan-administered regions.
The operation sparked heavy cross-border exchanges until a ceasefire was agreed upon by both military leaderships on May 10.

India has maintained that its strong military response compelled Pakistan to seek an end to the fighting.
Meanwhile, Munir’s promotion to Field Marshal marks the first such elevation since Ayub Khan in 1959, underscoring his prominence in Pakistan’s military hierarchy.
The proposed Nobel nomination has sparked varied reactions, highlighting the complex dynamics of South Asian diplomacy and global recognition of peace efforts.
