GUWAHATI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several states in the Northeast including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday.
This alert comes amidst warnings of adverse weather conditions looming over the Northeast region for the next five days.
The IMD has identified key meteorological phenomena worsening the situation, including cyclonic circulations over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Marathwada, along with a trough extending from Meghalaya to the cyclonic circulation over Marathwada in lower tropospheric levels.
These factors are expected to significantly impact weather patterns, necessitating heightened preparedness and vigilance from the public.
According to IMD forecasts, strong south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to prevail over Northeast at lower tropospheric levels on May 5th and 6th.
In light of these forecasts, the public is strongly advised to take precautionary measures.
It is recommended to avoid roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, low-lying areas, and spots prone to water accumulation due to the risk of flooding.
Additionally, individuals are urged to stay clear of power lines or electrical wires and to refrain from seeking shelter in kachcha houses during heavy rainfall to mitigate the risk of structural collapse.
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and drive carefully amidst challenging road conditions.
As the Northeast braces itself for the impending weather onslaught, proactive measures and heightened awareness remain key to minimising the potential impact of this natural phenomenon on lives and infrastructure.
