New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended a warm invitation to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams to visit India after her return from a nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Williams is set to return to Earth early Wednesday, and the letter, dated March 1, was delivered through former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino.

Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh shared the letter on social media platform X, highlighting Modi’s admiration for Williams’ achievements.

“Even though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and the success of your mission,” Modi wrote.

The Prime Minister expressed India’s pride in Williams, calling her one of the nation’s most illustrious daughters. “After your return, we look forward to welcoming you to India. It will be an honour for us to host you,” he said.

Modi fondly recalled meeting Williams and her late father, Dr. Deepak Pandya, during his 2016 visit to the United States.

He mentioned that her name came up during a recent conversation with Massimino at an event in New Delhi, which inspired him to write the letter.

“During our conversation, your name came up, and we discussed how immensely proud we are of your achievements. After this interaction, I felt compelled to reach out to you,” the Prime Minister added.

Modi shared that he had inquired about Williams’ well-being during his meetings with former U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, emphasising the immense admiration of 1.4 billion Indians for her accomplishments.

“Your recent mission once again showcases your remarkable fortitude and perseverance,” he said, adding that Williams’ mother, Bonnie Pandya, must be eagerly awaiting her return while her late father’s blessings would undoubtedly be with her.

The Prime Minister also extended his regards to Williams’ husband, Michael Williams, and expressed hope for a future visit that would inspire millions in India.
