ITANAGAR: Chief Minister of Meghalaya and the National President of the National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad Sangma has stressed the importance of giving more power to the Northeast in India’s politics.
He says it’s crucial for people from the Northeast to have a stronger say in the decisions made in the capital, New Delhi.
Sangma believes that in a democratic country like India, having enough support is very important.
Speaking to a gathering at the end of his three-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, he said, “In a democracy, numbers are always important.”
He highlighted the need for the Northeastern states to come together and make sure that their issues are taken seriously in New Delhi.
He stated, “If we want the government in New Delhi to listen to us, we need to strengthen our own political parties so that they take us seriously and listen to our problems.”
Sangma also talked about how politicians from the Northeast have been ignored in the past when they raised concerns in New Delhi.
However, he believes this is slowly changing as leaders from the region are standing together and speaking up for their people.
He also stressed on the importance of making smart political decisions and choosing leaders who can express the needs and concerns of the people from the Northeast clearly.
Even though Sangma’s party, the NPP, is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he assured everyone that the interests of the people from the Northeast will always come first for them.
“While we work with the NDA, we will always prioritise the needs of the Northeastern people,” he said.
Sangma promised to always work hard for the welfare of the people who have put their trust in the NPP.
“Our party believes in doing what is best for our people and our country,” he added, ensuring his commitment to improving the lives of those in the Northeast.
