The Indian Army has extended support to the local community in North Sikkim’s Yumthang Valley by providing specialised high-altitude adventure equipment to boost community-led tourism in the region.
The assistance includes camping gear, climbing equipment, safety kits, cooking sets and other essential items needed to operate adventure tourism activities in the valley.
Officials said the equipment will help villagers establish structured adventure camps to cater to the 20–25 tourists who visit the area daily.
The initiative is also expected to enable local youth to offer guided treks, camping experiences and basic adventure activities in a safer and more organised manner.
Pema Dorjee, Pipon of the Lachung Dzumsa, who is leading the community effort, said the support will help residents manage tourism more responsibly and expand livelihood opportunities.

“This support allows our youth to organise adventure activities in a structured way and welcome more visitors with confidence,” he said.
Army officials said the initiative aims to build local capacity, promote responsible tourism and strengthen the economy in one of Sikkim’s most scenic high-altitude locations.
It is part of the Army’s wider outreach efforts in North Sikkim, including the Ranbhoomi Darshan initiative, which promotes tourism in border areas and deepens engagement with local communities.
