GUWAHATI: The Northeast is bracing for a week of inclement weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts widespread rainfall across the region.
This forecast arises from a cyclonic circulation over Assam and its neighbouring areas, persisting at lower tropospheric levels.
To address the potential impact of the weather, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya from Sunday to Monday, urging residents and local authorities to be prepared.
Additionally, a yellow watch, advising residents to stay informed, is in effect for the remaining states for the next five days.
According to the IMD, light to moderate showers are expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of sub-himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
However, some areas are likely to experience significantly heavier downpours, as reported by IMD.
The cyclonic circulation, situated between 1.5 km and 2.1 km above mean sea level, is primarily responsible for the anticipated rainfall.
Specific forecasts indicate that Arunachal Pradesh will see heavy showers exceeding 64 mm until Sunday, while Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive similar amounts through Monday.
Nagaland and Manipur are also under a heavy rain advisory for Sunday.
Meghalaya stands out with the highest likelihood of experiencing very heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding 115 mm on both Sunday and Monday.
In addition to the rain, the forecast warns of hot and humid conditions in Assam and Tripura, predicting an uncomfortable weekend.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather reports to navigate the adverse conditions expected in the coming week.
