Agartala: Former president of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee, Pijush Kanti Biswas and five other senior leaders on Wednesday joined Trinamool Congress ahead of the state assembly election.
Biswas and the other leaders joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He had resigned from Congress in August this year.
TMC leaders said the party is likely to appoint Biswas as the new president of the party in Tripura.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party had sacked its state president Subal Bhowmick for his failure to win by-elections for four Assembly seats and the municipal elections in Tripura.
In addition to Biswas, the others who joined Trinamool Congress are: Tejen Das, Ananta Banerjee, Bimal Rudra Paul, Purnita Chakma and Samarendra Ghosh. Tejen Das and Ananta Banerjee served as general secretaries of Tripura Pradesh Congress, Purnita Chakma was a former working president of Tripura Congress. Samarendra Ghosh, was a general secretary of Tripura Youth Congress.
