The Election Commission of India (ECI) is getting ready to announce the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after March 13.
Reports doing the round in national press informs that teams from the ECI are currently evaluating the readiness of different states for the elections and will finish by around March 13.
The ECI, in its official social media handle, informed on Saturday that Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Arun Goyal will address a press meet on the review of poll preparedness, in Chennai at 3 pm today.
Reports also add that ECI teams will visit states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and others in the coming weeks to take stock of preparedness and will only take a call post that.
They’ll also be in Jammu and Kashmir on March 13.
Currently, the ECI officials are meeting regularly with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from various states to address any issues before the elections.
They’re focusing on things like moving voting machines, ensuring enough security, and monitoring borders, reported a national news organisation.
Efforts are also underway to see if it’s feasible to hold all elections across the country at the same time. A committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind is looking into this.
They’ve even consulted with former Chief Justices Deepak Mishra and SA Bobde.
In the meantime, some states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh are planning to hold both Lok Sabha and assembly elections together in the coming months.
With around 97 crore eligible voters, marking a 6% increase from the last elections, India gears up for another significant democratic event in 2024.
The upcoming announcement from the ECI signals the beginning of an important phase in the country’s democratic journey.
