New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced that it has finalised the Electoral College list for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, marking a key step in the constitutional process to fill the country’s second-highest office.
In a press statement, the Commission confirmed that the updated list of electors—comprising elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha—has been compiled in accordance with Article 66(1) of the Constitution and Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of members from both Houses of Parliament.
The Commission stated that the list has been prepared in continuous serial order and arranged alphabetically by State or Union Territory to which the members belong.
“With this, the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election 2025 stands finalised,” the ECI noted, adding that the move ensures transparency and procedural accuracy in the conduct of the election.

The announcement signals the formal start of the Vice Presidential poll process and comes just days after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from the post citing health reasons, triggering political speculation and activity.
The Commission is now expected to announce the poll schedule shortly.
The Vice President also serves as the ex officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, making the election significant in the context of parliamentary functioning.
