The Delhi Traffic Police issued 868 challans for drunken driving during New Year’s Eve celebrations, officials said on Thursday, as authorities intensified enforcement to curb dangerous road behaviour.
Special teams were deployed across major arterial roads, nightlife hubs and residential areas to check offences such as drunk driving, overspeeding and motorcycle stunts.
Breathalyser tests were carried out at multiple checkpoints through the night, with enforcement teams frequently changing locations to prevent motorists from bypassing checks.
Alongside traffic regulation, the Delhi Police pressed nearly 20,000 personnel into service to maintain law and order as the city rang in the New Year.
Crowd movement was monitored through CCTV surveillance, while district control rooms remained in constant coordination to ensure quick response to any untoward incident.
Police said heightened vigilance was maintained in crowded zones including Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Aerocity.
The drive, officials added, was aimed not only at penalising violations but also at sending a strong deterrent message against drunk driving, a leading cause of road accidents in the capital.
