GUWAHATI: The Indian National Congress (INC), in a strategic move, announced on August 20 the formation of a newly constituted working committee. A notable aspect of this committee’s composition is the inclusion of prominent leaders from the Northeast, reflecting a concerted effort to fortify the party’s presence in the region, in light of the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Assam Member of Parliament Gourav Gogoi, former Chief Minister of Mizoram Lal Thanhawla, and former Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur Gaikhangam Gangmei, among other distinguished figures, have been inducted as fresh members into this critical committee.
The significance of having leaders from the Northeast in the Central Working Committee (CWC) is unmistakable; it underscores a well-calculated strategy to amplify the Congress party’s footing in a region of strategic electoral importance. With the 2024 Lok Sabha polls on the horizon, this inclusion is indicative of the party’s intent to secure its position in the forthcoming political landscape.
One pivotal standout in this development is the elevation of Gourav Gogoi, currently holding the position of the deputy leader of the party in the Lower House. His induction into the CWC is a remarkable stride in his political trajectory, hinting at the pivotal role he is poised to play within the party’s larger strategy.
The move to include Gogoi in the CWC bears the hallmarks of a well-coordinated plan. Evidently, a significant deliberation between the Congress’s senior echelons and the leadership in Assam has culminated in this decision, reflecting the party’s commitment to meticulous planning and cohesive execution.
On August 2, in a bid to ensure a robust and transparent candidate selection process ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Rajasthan, Congress President Kharge had made Gogoi the chairman of a Screening Committee to shortlist competent candidates for the polls.
Expressing confidence that Gogoi will steer the committee’s efforts in evaluating potential candidates rigorously, Kharge had said that members Ganesh Godiyal and Abhishek Dutt will also be a part of the committee.
