Guwahati: The Ministry of Railways has approved the final location survey for a proposed railway line in Sikkim, stretching from Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship, according to an official release.
The Northeast Frontier Railway will carry out the survey at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.25 crore.
This development represents a significant step toward enhancing rail connectivity in the southern and western parts of Sikkim.
The planned 75-kilometre route, identified during the preliminary feasibility study, is designed to address a critical infrastructure gap by connecting remote areas such as Dentam—near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang—to the national railway network.
This new line is envisioned as a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway line, which is expected to be operational by 2027.
Melli, a key gateway to southern and western Sikkim, is set to become a junction point for this proposed expansion, helping integrate these regions more effectively with the national transport system.
The final location survey will deliver essential technical data, feasibility insights, and guidance for engineering design and cost estimation, paving the way for the next phases of the project.
According to the statement, the initiative is expected to act as a catalyst for regional development by improving accessibility, boosting tourism, stimulating trade, and creating employment opportunities—particularly in Gyalshing and surrounding areas.
Tendering for the survey-related work is expected to begin soon.
