A day after the BJP’s thumping win in the Delhi Assembly election, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and the party’ winning candidate in Delhi assembly election Atishi handed over her resignation as chief minister to Lt Governor V K Saxena on Sunday.
Later, the Lt Governor announced the dissolution of the seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT Delhi), according to an official notification released on Sunday.
The notification, dated February 7, stated, “In exercise of the power conferred upon me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative A
Atishi retained her Kalkaji seat defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes.
The BJP returned to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, winning 48 of the 70 assembly seats and restricting the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP to 22 seats, much lower from its 2020 election tally of 62 and the majority mark of 36.
The Congress, meanwhile, drew a blank in the polls held on February 5.
Atishi took oath as chief minister in September last year after AAP convenor and her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post amid corruption allegations against him.
Atishi is the only woman candidate of AAP who won this time.
The election saw AAP’s top guns, including its national convener Arvind Kejriwal and senior leaders Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj, lose.
