GUWAHATI: In the heat of the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) campaign has once again ignited the Babri Masjid issue, with top leaders bringing it to the forefront of their rallies and speeches.
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lead, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the matter during a campaign rally in Odisha’s Malkangiri, urging voters to rally behind the Saffron party.
Sarma, while canvassing support for BJP candidate Narasingha Madkami, highlighted the need to prevent the Congress from potentially reconstructing the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
“We aim for 400 seats as we believe Congress may rebuild the Babri Masjid. We must ensure Babri Masjid is never rebuilt in India. This is why we must secure more than 400 seats for PM Modi and elect him as Prime Minister,” he asserted before the gathering.
Sarma’s remarks echo The Prime Minister’s views earlier this month, where he asked voters’ support for 400 Lok Sabha seats to prevent the Congress from reconstructing the Masjid.
“Modi wants 400 seats so that the Congress won’t bring back Article 370 to spoil the game, Modi wants 400 seats so that the Congress won’t put a Babri lock on the Ram temple in Ayodhya,” he had said.
However, in response to these claims, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rebutted the Prime Minister’s claims, asserting that the Congress would uphold the Supreme Court’s verdict on the matter.
As the Lok Sabha polls enter its final phases, debates surrounding contentious issues such as the Babri Masjid are expected to persist, trying to shape electorates’ narrative in the run-up to polling day.
