Dhaka: Police in Bangladesh have arrested two individuals for distributing leaflets from the Awami League party, led by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The arrests occurred late Monday night, a day after the interim government warned of strict action against such campaigns.
The two arrested men, identified as Zaman Mia, the general secretary of the Awami League’s Swechasebak League in Narayanganj’s Ward No. 20, and Saidul Islam, an activist with the same organisation, were apprehended at an autorickshaw garage in the Sonakanda area of Bandar upazila, Narayanganj.
According to reports from the Dhaka Tribune, the arrests were made following the circulation of a video showing the distribution of the leaflets, which was posted on the official Facebook page of the Awami League.
On Monday, they were distributing the leaflets at their own autorickshaw garage when the video of their actions went viral on social media.

In response to the viral video, police launched an operation to apprehend the individuals. Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tarikul Islam confirmed their arrest and mentioned that a case was being prepared against them.
The arrest follows a warning issued earlier by Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the Chief Adviser, who cautioned that distributing Awami League leaflets would result in legal action.
Alam stated that the leaflets contained material that could potentially disrupt public order.
