Just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Chief Adviser Mohammed Yunus met on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, Dhaka has sent its new High Commissioner to India.
Riaz Hamidullah, a 1995 batch officer of the Bangladesh Foreign Service, arrived in New Delhi on Monday to assume his role as the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India.
Hamidullah was appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India in February, but his arrival was delayed, reportedly due to recent tensions that strained India-Bangladesh relations.
His arrival is seen as a positive outcome of the meeting between PM Modi and chief advisor Yunus in Bangkok
The previous High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman, who was appointed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, served till October 2024 and ever since the post has been vacant.
Riaz Hamidullah, an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University and Dhaka University, recently served as Secretary (West) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Dhaka. He also briefly held the position of Foreign Secretary in charge. His previous diplomatic postings include Ambassador of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.
