Nepal Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Wednesday met President Ramchandra Paudel at Sheetal Niwas (President House) to discuss matters relating to the timely conduct of the general elections next year.

The meeting came a day after the prime minister reviewed election preparations with officials of the Election Commission.

Karki, 73, assumed office as prime minister on September 12, bringing an end to days of political uncertainty that followed the ouster of K. P. Sharma Oli amid violent youth-led Gen Z protests over corruption and a social media ban.

Acting on Karki’s recommendation, President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives and set March 5 as the date for fresh elections.

According to sources, during the meeting with President Paudel, Karki discussed the prevailing political and security situation as well as preparations for the election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

On Tuesday, Karki exchanged views on necessary legal amendments, election management, resource mobilisation, and other related issues during the meeting with acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.

Law Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, who also attended the meeting, said that discussions focussed on identifying and addressing any issues that could obstruct election preparations.

As of now, the number of people eligible for voting, is estimated to be 1, 81, 68,000. However, with the announcement of a fresh election, legal provisions must be made to reopen voter registration, an official at the Election Commission has said.
