A government assessment has estimated that the Gen Z–led movement in Nepal, which preceded the fall of the K P Sharma Oli government, caused damage worth Rs 84.45 billion and claimed 77 lives across the country.

The findings were presented on Thursday at a Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar by a committee constituted to evaluate the loss of life and damage to public and private property during the two-day agitation on September 8 and 9.

Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said the committee also submitted a reconstruction plan to Prime Minister Sushila Karki, outlining steps to restore damaged public infrastructure.

According to the report, the unrest affected all seven provinces, with damage recorded in 54 of Nepal’s 77 districts and across 262 local units.

Of the total fatalities, 20 were reported on September 8, 37 on September 9, and the remaining 20 in the days following the protests.

The agitation left 2,429 people injured. Among them, 17 were children below the age of 13, while 1,433 were in the 13–28 age group, underscoring the significant impact on young people.

The committee noted that 2,168 government and public institutions were affected, with 2,671 buildings damaged, resulting in losses estimated at Rs 39.31 billion.

In addition, 12,659 vehicles were damaged, accounting for losses of about Rs 12.93 billion.

Sector-wise, the report pegged losses in the government and public sector at Rs 44.93 billion, the private sector at Rs 33.54 billion, and community and other sectors at Rs 5.97 billion.

To address the damage, the committee proposed a reconstruction action plan requiring an estimated Rs 36.30 billion to rebuild affected government and public sector infrastructure.

The committee was formed through a cabinet decision on September 21, 2025, and completed its assessment within 75 days.
