A month after several Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in Malaysia for their alleged involved with the Islamic State, a seven-member team of police investigators from Kuala Lumpur reached Dhaka on Tuesday to hold detailed discussions on cybercrime and terrorism.
Led by an officer of the rank of deputy commissioner, the Malaysian team will be in Dhaka till August 1.
During their sojourn, the Malaysian officers will hold a series of closed-door interactions with officials of Bangladesh’s Home Ministry as well as Special Branch, Anti-Terrorism Unit and Cybercrime divisions.
Bangladesh Police sources said that the effort will be to build “close working relationships” between middling level investigators of the two countries, which has been occasioned since at least 35 Bangladeshi nationals came under the scanner of Malaysian law enforcement authorities between April and June 2025 for their suspected links with the Islamic State.
Since then, Malaysian immigration authorities have debarred the entry into their country of at least 135 Bangladeshi nationals.
Official documents accessed by Northeast News show that on August 31 the Malaysian team, led by Azman Bin Abdullah Razak, Principal Assistant Director, E8, Special Branch, of the Royal Malaysia Police, will take part in a workshop on “sharing existing evidence and recent developments related to people smuggling to Australia through Malaysia and Indonesia”.

While this would be the main thrust of the workshop, an additional focus will be to apprise the Malaysian guests of the functioning of the Bangladesh Special Branch’s immigration unit at the Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport.
