Dhaka: The historic Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University, once a symbol of student activism and political change in Bangladesh, has become the epicenter of violent clashes and political discord.

This week, the iconic venue witnessed renewed chaos as rival student organisations engaged in protests, scuffles, and confrontations.

Founded by Madhusudan Dey, who was tragically killed during the infamous Operation Searchlight on March 25, 1971, Madhur Canteen holds a revered place in Bangladesh’s history as the birthplace of student politics.

However, its image has deteriorated since the fall of the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

The interim administration under Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has struggled to maintain order, leaving the canteen under the control of radical Islamist student groups.

These groups, known for their pro-Pakistan stance during the Liberation War, have overshadowed the legacy of freedom fighters like Madhusudan Dey.

Tensions escalated on Wednesday when violence erupted between two groups following the launch of a new student organization, the Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (Bangladesh Democratic Students Union).

This group, spearheaded by former leaders of Students Against Discrimination (SAD), has faced fierce resistance from rival factions.

The altercation left at least 10 people injured, including a female student.

Of the injured, eight were from private universities, while two were Dhaka University students.

Rival groups opposing the new organization have called for a ‘Dhaka blockade’ on February 28, coinciding with plans by SAD and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee to launch a new political party.

The announcement has intensified tensions, further polarizing the student community.

This incident is the latest in a string of violent clashes among student groups across Bangladesh.

Just last week, a confrontation at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) resulted in over 100 injuries, underscoring the rising unrest in academic institutions.

As the Madhur Canteen remains a battleground for ideological and political conflicts, its historical significance as a hub for democratic movements is being overshadowed by the growing turmoil.

The events have cast a shadow on the sacrifices made during the Bangladesh Liberation War, leaving many questioning the future of student politics in the nation.
